05 / THE MARGIN NOTES

A few thingsyou might ask.

Is it safe to install, and what data do you collect?

Yes. The Falsify extension does nothing until you start a check: it doesn’t read or send anything from the pages you visit in the background. Here’s what we collect:

  • When you run a check: the text you asked us to check (the page, the passage you highlighted, or the video’s captions), plus that page’s address and title.
  • Your IP address, used only to apply the free daily limits if you haven’t signed in.
  • When you install: your country and region, the extension version, your browser, and a scrambled form of your IP address that can’t be turned back into the real one.
  • If you sign in with Google: your name, email address and profile picture.
  • If you send feedback: your message, and your email if you add it.

We don’t track your clicks, scrolling or typing. Payments go through Stripe, so we never see your card details. We don’t sell your data or use it for advertising.

Do I have to sign up?

No. The Falsify Chrome extension works without an account. You only need to sign in with Google if you want to keep a history of your checks or buy a plan.

Can I see my old checks?

Yes. Sign in and open History from the Falsify extension’s menu to reopen a past check, with its underlines restored right where they were on the page.

Is it biased?

No. The Falsify extension doesn’t take sides or rate news sites. It looks each claim up on Google and judges it only against what the sources say. Every verdict shows the exact sentence it relied on and the website it came from, so you can check its work yourself.

Who decides what counts as true?

You do. The Falsify extension tells you whether it thinks a claim is true or false, but it never asks you to take its word for it. Every verdict shows the exact sentence it was judged on and the website it came from, so you can check everything yourself and make up your own mind.

Why is it taking so long?

A full page check takes about 14 seconds on average. In that time, the Falsify extension finds the claims on the page, searches Google for each one, reads the sources it finds and checks every claim against them. Underlines appear as each claim is settled, so you can start reading the results right away.

Does it work on phones?

No. Chrome only runs extensions on computers, so the Falsify Chrome extension works on Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebooks, but not on phones or tablets.

What else is it useful for, besides fact-checking?

Plenty. Because the Falsify extension looks up every claim on the page, it doubles as a research tool:

  • Collecting sources: each claim comes with the websites it was checked against, so one check gives you a ready-made list of sources for an essay, a report or an argument.
  • Extra context: every verdict comes with a short explanation that adds background and information the original page left out.
  • Going deeper: each source opens on the exact sentence it was judged on, so you can read straight into the part that matters.

BEFORE YOU GO

One smallfavour.

Falsify is independent, and every check costs us real money in searches and AI. The free plan runs at a loss. For Falsify to keep going, it has to earn enough to pay for itself, and that mostly comes down to people like you.
